Hi there! My name is Sam the Ram. I've a flock of Scottish Blackface sheep to look after and I'm looking for your help. One thing's for sure – they can't wait to get to know you!

Ask The Shepherd

If you have any questions about sheep or any of the other farmyard animals you can ‘ask the shepherd’ by emailing ask@sponsorasheep.com

Some questions that the shepherd has already answered are listed below:

  1. Why is Timothy a Tup and Sam a Ram?  What’s the difference?
    Andrew Barclay, London
  1. Male sheep are usually called Rams but in Scotland we still use the word Tup as well.  Both mean ‘male sheep’.
  1. Are all female sheep called ewes?
    Sally Adams, Chester
  1. Female sheep are referred top as ewes once they have grown up into adults.
  1. Do sheep ever have triplets?
    Kieran, Dublin
  1. Yes sometimes they do Kieran!  It is quite unusual for Blackface sheep and more common in other breeds.  Sometimes even quads!!
  1. What do the sheep eat?
    Katie Marwick, Edinburgh
  1. Mostly grass Katie – but we have to feed them in the winter – especially when it has been snowing.  They get hay, sheep nuts and nutrient blocks (which they love).
